TERMITE SOLUTIONS

TERMITE SOLUTIONS

Termites are particularly troublesome pests as they can cause serious damage to your home or workplace, and are notoriously difficult to get rid of. Often, they thrive discreetly and in inaccessible spots making termite control difficult. Do-It-Yourself anti-termite treatments like termite spray might not be able to treat termite infestation at the root level, especially in the case of large termite colonies. Getting termite treatment from an expert pest control brand is the best way to remove termites from your property and safeguarding your precious belongings.

Termites

Termites are a group of insect that mostly feed on dead plant materials, with the ability to digest cellulose. Subterranean termites, the most destructive wooden pest in the world, build their colonies in the soil and usually work their way above ground to reach wood or any other cellulose source. In search for food, subterranean termites will forage into homes from below the ground level right up to the highest point of the roof thrust. Over time, termite damage can become significant on door frames, kitchen cabinets, staircase and wooden flooring.

Signs of termite

Termite infestation is usually not apparent until severe damages have incurred. They live in dark, humid and protected environment, which make them so hard to find - until it’s too late. As termites devour their way through wood from the inside, it can be rather challenging to detect a termite infestation but there are some tell-tale signs that indicate their presence.

What does termite damage look like?

How do I know if I have termites? Your first clue to a termite problem may be small flying insects – known as termite Swarmers - flying near your windows and leaving behind their discarded wings. This phenomenon generally occurs in the spring time. However, termites are active all year round, and as termite swarmers look very similar to flying ants, correct identification is critical as part of a professional customized solution. Termites are secretive pests and spotting them can prove to be very tricky. They can live undetected in hollow doors and wall voids for many years. Apart from spotting termite swarmers in the spring, another obvious indicator of their presence is the damage they inflict on properties. To actually tell if you have termites in your home, it is often easier to look for the early damage signs they can typically cause.

DIY monitoring tips

Termites are amazingly proficient when it comes to finding the access to your property. They can get into any building through tiny cracks and crevices less than 1/16 inches wide. And to make matters worse, your property may be sitting on up to six subterranean termite colonies in a single acre plot, with each colony housing up to millions of termites. The last thing you want to do is to allow them to infiltrate your home with ease. Here are some effective termite DIY monitoring tips to make sure that your property doesn't become theirs.Remove tree branches, debris, cellulose materials and dead leaves around the property – Tree branches or cellulose materials against the wall provide an attractive food source and nesting site for subterranean termites. It can also hide evidence of termite invasion in your home.
Repair leaking taps and pipes Repairing these leaks will reduce moisture levels, which attract subterranean termites to your property.
Use only termite treated wood in garden beds, retaining walls or fence post Do not use untreated wood to form garden beds or retaining walls, as these will attract termites around your property.
Don’t allow climbing plants or bushy gardens to grow against the structure Climbing plants growing against the side of the structure of your property provide termites with entry undetected. The roots of some plants can also penetrate the foundations of your property allowing termites access that is very difficult to locate.
Remove dead trees and stumps Dead trees and stumps are ideal sites for termites to nest in. Remove these or have them treated to reduce the risk to your property.
Ensure all scaffolding wood is removed after construction Termites can often attack scaffolding and use it to gain access into your home.
Even with the above proactive measures, it is still important to get your home inspected by professional at least once annually to ensure that your house is not invaded by termites.

If you look closely, termites have two sections to their body while ants have three. Soldier termites have a slightly darkened, or brown, head. You will also see termites with wings, called alates. The function of the Queen and King in the termite colony is to reproduce. Starting out life as an Alate, they leave their parents' colony, drop to the ground and shed their wings to seek out an environment to nest. They care for their young until they are able to take over the duties of the colony.

The workers make up the largest number within a colony. They do all of the work (except defend and reproduce): feeding, grooming, excavating the nest and making tunnels. In doing their jobs, they cause the destruction that effects so many homes.

Soldiers defend the colony against attack by predatory enemies such as ants, and are equipped with large jaws, sticky fluids or chemical spray to do so.

Alates are the winged reproductives that swarm out from the nest and establish new colonies. Male and females pair off and look for a suitable environment to mate. They are often confused with ant swarmers.
